I believe it is so important to empower the senior population with relevant information and confidence to keep going with self care as much as possible for as long as possible.
The other day I received a question:
Can diabetes cause numbness in legs?
There is something known as Peripheral neuropathy which is nerve damage caused by chronically high blood sugar and diabetes. It leads to numbness, loss of sensation, and sometimes pain in your feet, legs, or hands. It is one of the most common complication of diabetes. If this is a symptom you are feeling, you must see your doctor right away.
What many people do not realize is Diabetes is a significant health concern among seniors, affecting their quality of life and increasing the risk of serious complications. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are prevalent in this age group, with many experiencing additional challenges, such as weakened immune systems and pre-existing health conditions. The complications of diabetes can be severe, including heart disease, kidney damage, neuropathy, and vision problems, making effective management crucial.
Managing diabetes presents unique challenges for seniors, including medication management and dietary restrictions. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and ongoing doctor visits are vital for maintaining health. Lifestyle modifications, such as adopting a balanced diet and engaging in safe physical activities, can greatly improve their condition. This one gentleman I know who is approaching his 80’s, does feel numbness in his legs, he uses his walker, does daily exercise and watches his sweets. All on his own with a provider to help if he needs it.
Support systems play a crucial role. Family, friends, and community resources can empower seniors to manage their diabetes effectively.
Education about the disease helps raise awareness of symptoms and the importance of seeking timely help.
With proper management and support, seniors can lead fulfilling, healthy lives despite diabetes. It’s essential for communities to come together to provide the necessary resources and encouragement for seniors managing this chronic condition. Together, we can advocate for better care and understanding of diabetes in our aging population.
