The Canadian Museum of Nature is the first museum to participate in the national Prescri-Nature program

Ottawa, August 30, 2023 — Families in the National Capital Region preparing for the next school year will be able to get a prescription from their doctor for a particularly beneficial dose of learning.

Doctors, in fact, can now prescribe visits to the Canadian Museum of Nature for their patients thanks to a new collaboration with the pan-Canadian Prescri-Nature program .

Hundreds of studies underline it: being in symbiosis with nature does the greatest good for our health. Notable improvements range from alleviating symptoms of depression to boosting immunity to reducing heart conditions and dementia. Just listening to a recording of birds or even looking at photos of natural landscapes can lift our spirits.

The Canadian Museum of Nature is the first museum to join the mission of the pan-Canadian Prescri-Nature program.

“The health benefits of nature are well known,” says Danika Goosney, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Nature. “With this partnership, we can offer a captivating introduction to the wonders of natural history and the health-giving effects of a museum visit.” This connection can spark a growing interest and greater appreciation for nature. »

Another undeniable impact of nature prescription is the desire it arouses to protect our planet.

The Prescri-Nature program, launched by the BC Parks Foundation in November 2020, is now deployed in all provinces. In less than three years, more than 11,000 healthcare professionals, including more than 5% of Canadian doctors, have signed up to prescribe the outdoors to their patients, helping to reconnect thousands of people with nature. The standard recommendation is: “two hours or more per week, for at least twenty minutes each time.” This recommendation is supported by more than eighty major health sector organizations, including the Canadian Medical Association.

Prescri-Nature has made international headlines citing its innovative approach to improving access to nature for better health, including partnerships with organizations like Parks Canada that make it possible to prescribe free passes for national parks .

Healthcare professionals in the National Capital Region registered with Prescri-Nature can now prescribe Canadian Museum of Nature passes to patients who could benefit the most. Studies show that patients are more motivated to change their habits when the advice is documented in a prescription.
